Parts 1 and 2

Over the last 20 years I have developed a series of workshops designed to upskill new and experienced attendees alike. Whilst these are “tried and true” they can easily be customized to meet the timeframe available, the skill levels of the attendees and any particular needs of the group.

Part 1 is ideally presented as a two day course in which Day One is workshop based learning and Day Two is entirely made up of practical exercises.

Whilst designed primarily for new Directors, many experienced Directors have enjoyed the opportunity to refresh their knowledge and often report having learned some new tricks and tips along the way.

Day One is also highly recommended for anyone who works with Directors, ie MD’s, Choreographers, Production Managers and Committee Members.

Day 1 can be delivered as a stand alone course, and for smaller groups could still include some practical elements.

DAY 1 Content (Open to all numbers)

  • The roles of the management team (Director, Musical Director, Choreographer, Production Manager etc)
  • What does a director actually do
  • Creating “The Vision” (it’s not as hard as it seems!)
  • Responsibilities
  • Preserving the illusion
  • Selecting a show
  • Time table formulas
  • People
  • The rehearsal schedule
  • Preparing and meetings
  • HOD’s
  • How to create / discuss lighting when you don’t know anything about lighting!
  • Auditions – set up – what to look for – setting expectations
  • Rehearsals
  • Blocking – it’s a layering technique
  • Dealing with beginners and prima donna’s
  • Common directing errors
  • Dealing with Conflict
  • Plus a whole heap of other little bits and pieces and information

DAY 2 Content (Note numbers are strictly limited for day 2)

  • Practical exercise with participants directing each other using scripts and exercises provided the day before.  A chance to put in place the learning’s of the previous day.

An Introduction to Directing Musicals Part 2

This is a separate one day workshop which continues on from Part 1 and involves more advanced techniques for working with actors including exercises designed to help actors portray emotions. It also includes Lighting for Directors.
